About the Artists
Joliza
Joliza is a singer-songwriter from Gqeberha who brings awakening through the revival of folktales told through African song. Joliza has spent years honing his craft to produce his Bhacasoul sound which integrates his Bhaca heritage sounds, ujojo and contemporary musical elements. The African traditional theme is translated from the stage set up to the band’s outfits. Joliza’s performance captivates all kinds of audience. He moves the young and old alike with his voice, sound and relatable lyrical content which are both healing and liberating.
He starts the show with a song that speaks about the pursuit of dreams in the face of adversity, asking God’s light and protection through the journey. This is followed by a song titled Uyingcuka derived from the Xhosa idiom, ingcuka eyambethe ufele lwegusha (a wolf in sheep’s clothing). Here Joliza speaks about a person who plots your demise (metaphorically) all the while pretending to be your friend. Influences of reggae shine through in the song Ndithwale hashe lam (ndithunyiwe Niniva). Here Joliza quotes a biblicalstory of Noah as he reflects on trials and tribulations encountered as he continues to journey to where he has been sent (Niniva).
Joliza has perfected the art of using his Bhaca heritage sounds and contemporary music to join two worlds that possibly or often fail at times to coexist. Etakwithsi live with Joliza moves its audience to find their feet rhythmically without Joliza informing them to do so. The music telepathically touches everyone who has an ear and soul. His deep message that celebrates his heritage is evident in a song Unonkala. The socially lyrical content is found in a song Nembeza which speaks about the brutal killing of women and children. In this song he speaks against abuse and calls for the protection of victims.
The song Marikana reminds the audience of the tragic incident that saw the unfortunate demise of striking miners in 2012. Joliza and the band transports spiritual awakening every time they play a song with the aim to give the audience music that heals the soul.
