Unyaka Onesiqhuma
Umle
Musical Performance or Concert / The Black Box Theatre / Mendi Centre

Unyaka Onesiqhuma, is an isiXhosa expression to describe ‘something that is taking too long’. The work is a journey through the challenges and complexities that black societies faced during and after the Covid-19 pandemic where families lost loved ones, unemployment was at an all-time high and gender-based violence was unabated.

Themed as a composition of playfulness in hopeless times, each song has its own moving graphic that will be projected while it is performed and uses comedic elements to engage with the audience and bring hope and happiness through their music.

Umle’s Siphamandla Fete (AKA Spara) and Siyabonga Radu (AKA Feido) will keep audiences entertained with their self-styled “Sis Today” themed music. The word ‘Umle’, in isiXhosa means ‘smoke residue - from the heat of the sun’ and speaks to the duo’s wanting to leave a permanent mark with those who come across their sound.

About the Artists

Guitarist/vocalist Siphamandla Fete (AKA Spara) and Siyabonga Radu (AKA Feido) have won the hearts and minds of music lovers from all over South Africa and have coined the term “Sis Today” which they have punted as “today’s sound mixed with all influences". Influenced by music greats including Madala Kunene, Brenda Fassie, Jabu Khanyile, Frank Ocean and Lauryn Hill, Gqeberha-based two-man singing sensation Umle are ready to keep audiences bopping their heads and tapping their feet in a unique musical experience.

Perfectly blending sound and melody seasoned with a pinch of soul and spiced-up with boom bap, hip hop and mbaqanga, Umle serves a fluid combination of isiXhosa and English. Using elements of comedy in their act, Umle also reports on social issues the band has witnessed around them while bringing a message of hope to their lively performances.

The pair had also worked with different producers and recorded their project in three different studios, the Colormineboys studios in Zwide, Audionamics studio in KwaDwesi as well as ECAVC in East London. Producers on this production include Nduduzo Makhathini, Lwazi Mahashe and Cush Solomon. The project also featured some local artists from KwaDwesi including Msaki and Samthing Soweto.
