QAQAMBA
Monde Wani

Qaqamba is a vibrant African take on the Cinderalla tale – using theatre, music and dance to tell the story of a young girl. Qaqamba, who is called to be a traditional healer. She lives with her aunt, her mother's sister, who causes her to suffer for issues she’d had with her mother. Her nearest relatives are also not supportive, antagonising her and her gift.

The story follows the string of manifestations of Qaqamba's gifts and, under her late mother's guidance, she manages to win the heart of a prince through the tradition of ukwenzisa. But her gift stands in the way of marrying the prince as she drowns in the river. After her drowning, a ceremony is made that ultimately returns her, and she marries the prince. Qaqamba is a tale of strength for those who are underdogs and whose lives are in the doldrums.
