In this four-day educational workshop series, delegates will explore the role of heritage in the arts. The series of workshops will give delegates a thorough understanding of arts, heritage, and archive management and the practical skills of curating, project management, and archiving. There is also a focus on individualised career development plans and enhanced networks within the arts, heritage and archives sectors. Empowered with the practical tools and knowledge needed to thrive in their respective fields, attendees can expect to meet a new community of professionals dedicated to preserving and promoting culture and heritage.
Day 1: Introduction to Arts, Heritage, and Archives Objective: Understand the foundational concepts of arts, heritage, and archival practice and how these fields interconnect.
Day 2: Practical Arts and Heritage Management Objective: Learn essential skills for managing arts and heritage projects, exhibitions, and archives.
Day 3: Archives Development and Digital Transformation Objective: Explore the role of archives in arts and heritage, with a focus on digital tools.
Day 4: Enhancing Careers in Arts, Heritage, and Archives Objective: Equip participants with skills to build successful careers and
further engage in their sectors.
About the Artists
Ryan Pillay serves as the Director of SAS Strategic Arts Solutions and the Chair of the South African Museums Association (SAMA) in the Eastern Cape, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the region’s cultural and heritage landscape. With deep expertise in arts management, heritage preservation, and education, he continues to lead initiatives that promote the arts and
preserve South Africa’s cultural Heritage. Pillay’s extensive teaching experience spans the TVET and Higher Education sectors, where his academic focus on Sociology and Political Science has enabled him to explore gender, heritage, memory, and place.
As a qualitative methodologist, he has designed, facilitated, and documented over 100 processes in both public and private sectors, using visual participatory methods to ensure that marginalised voices are heard. In addition to his leadership roles, Ryan Pillay is a Trustee at the South End Museum and the Gcina Mhlope Trust. His work is characterised by strategic thinking, project management, and stakeholder engagement, making him a key figure in fostering cultural dialogue and transformation.
Through SAS Strategic Arts Solutions, he continues to implement successful arts-based projects that bridge the gap between arts, heritage, and community development. Pillay’s humane, courageous, and career-driven leadership underscores his commitment to the arts and heritage sectors, solidifying his reputation as a visionary leader within South Africa’s cultural scene.
