Sherrup Sherrup!!!
Jazzy Productions Marcellus Weman
Musical Theatre / Athenaeum Little Theatre

Sherrup, Sherrup! is a musical theatre production that highlights emotional abuse through jazz and poetry written and produced by Gqeberha musician, Marcellus Welman. It’s a 15-cast play with eight musicians and seven poets. Using a keyboard, guitar, bass guitar, drums, trumpet, trombone, and two saxophones as supporting instruments to create an ambience, this play journeys through the self-discovery and courage of a woman trying to leave an abusive partner. Will she resist the path of darkness and emerge triumphant?

About the Artists

Marcellus Richard Welman, an award-winning artist, was born in July 1965. He started his music and art journey at 15. From humble beginnings of playing instruments at church, to his glorious moments of joining the South African National Jazz Orchestra, directed by MacCoy Mrubata, which performed at the Mandela Bay Legacy Festival and National Arts Festival.

In between, he moved on to being the bandmaster of Brigade, presenting music training and classes on a regional level, founding the world-renowned St. Georges’ Cricket Band, joining the Field Band Foundation in 2007, serving as Regional Director for the Eastern Cape Chapter, to winning at National Champions, to name a few accolades. After making a mark on his home ground, he joined the Mandela Metro School of Arts, which established music schools in Gqeberha and Kariega. He also travelled to the USA and Norway through his artistic work. With the vision to start an initiative called Jazz and Poetry, Welman established a company called Jazzy Productions. It paved the way for artists and poets and raised funds to further the arts.
